Comox Valley Totals $16 Million worth of Building Permits
On April 26th, positive signs of a substantial recovery in construction activity were displayed to Courtenay city councillors.
Director of Planning Services, Peter Crawford, stated that there was a construction value totalling $16 million worth of building permits within the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island that had been issued in the first three months of 2010. Since the three month period, there have been several other projects which have been added to the total and several more are on the way. The figures display significant construction as opposed to the first quarter of 2009, wherein building permits amounted to a total of $3 million.
Several commercial and residential development applications presently in the system, could add millions of more dollars to the construction spending in the Comox Valley, if they are approved.
Included in the Comox Valley real estate development, is a two-phase residential development on Arden Road in Courtenay on Vancouver Island that combined, would account for 150 new Vancouver Island homes; a restaurant and residential development proposal near the Holiday Inn Express on Cliffe Avenue in Courtenay and at least 18 new Vancouver Island homes at Crown Isle Resort & Golf Community.
Kevin Lagan, Director of Operational Services, disclosed that his department is dealing with no fewer than 27 subdivision applications, 18 building permits and the assessment of 19 specific planning referrals.
The department is routing through 90 capital projects this year in terms of construction activity, ranging from small road paving projects to major water and sewer line replacement.
